Do opossums live in groups/ are they good for the environment?

Generally do opossims live in groups or by themselves? and are they useful to humans or the environment, and how? any other opossum information is welcolme as well.Do opossums live in groups/ are they good for the environment?
They only live in groups when it is a mother and babies. They serve the environment by scavenging and cleaning up natures waste.Do opossums live in groups/ are they good for the environment?
They live independently from each other.

They are beneficial to humans. They eat garden snails, bugs, young rats and mice, stuff like that.

When I moved into my present home, I soon came to the conclusion that we had opossums, because I never saw a snail. It was a while before I ever saw an opossum, though.

They do not carry diseases that humans, dogs or cats can catch, as their body temperature is too low for those diseases.

Opossums have the teeth of a carnivore, like a dog, and like a dog they will eat a big variety of things. They have coarse light gray fur, a long hairless tail, and a pointed face like a mouse, so they do look rather like a giant rat, but with ruffly ears like a guinea pig. Of course they are more like kangaroos than rats; they are marsupials, and carry their babies (called joeys) in their pouches.

Opossums are known for ';playing possum.'; Actually, when startled, they can go into a kind of seizure. Often a predator will not harm them in this state, because they think it's dead and don't want to eat carrion.

I've seen this a couple of times, when my dogs scared the opossums. The first time, I thought it was dead. Looking closer, I saw it was breathing. As I got even closer, it began to pull its lips back in a bizarre grin, as if poisoned by strychnine. As I moved away, it showed more signs of life and looked less dead. I left it there. 2 hours later I checked; it had moved, but when it saw me, it collapsed! This went on for a long time, I kept checking on it, and each time I did, it fainted again. In the morning, it was gone.

They can bite if cornered; I knew a woman whose dog, when she let it out to pee at night, would rush out barking, and come back with opossum bites. She had to start using a leash. .

You might be annoyed to have an opossum living in the attic. They will like to eat your pet's food and maybe some of yours, if they can get it.

How do opossum mate?

Should I get a opossum?

My uncle has pet oppossums and he said he would give me one they are very nice they dont stink and they use a litter box they are all very sweet should I take one as a petShould I get a opossum?
They make wonderful pets,(just don't expect them to come when you call, use a small bell, works better)Should I get a opossum?
I've had a few in my life.

They're rather easy to care for, very loving, super cute. :]

You can minimize cost by using a minimal cage and allowing him free roam of your house for the most part, or building your own cage.

Just be sure you know where there's a veterinarian that'll handle him, or if a local wildlife rehab center will help you out to find one, or care for him, when he needs it.
Before acquiring any animal, you must do your research.

Here are a few links to check into:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2046508_care-pet鈥?/a>

http://www.knowyoursto.com/

Please know these also get VERY expensive.

Not their price, but the cost to care for them.

Their cage, food, bedding, toys, treats, etc., this all adds up. Make sure you are ready to take on the responsibility before getting a pet.

hope this helps!

Lily
They're scary! All those teeth.

Why would you want one? Do they make good pets? I know, at least, where I live, it's illegal to keep wild animals as pets.
clearly.

Is it bad to feed the opossums?

I started putting food out for a stray cat, but saw that opossums were coming and eating the food. They come every night and eat the cat food. I was told this is bad because they will come to depend on the food I put out. I have read that they eat whatever food they can find, so I figure this is just what they happened to find. I don't want to mess up their natural feeding habits. Is it bad to feed the opossums?
I am a wildlife rehabilitator whose closest rehab buddy specializes in possies.

Possies do love their cat food, and frankly it is only a matter of time before the cat and possie are joined by the raccoons, skunks and rats, along with the crows during the day.

Should stray cats have food left out for them...IMO, no, the local shelter should be contacted, the cat caught, fixed and adopted out. Stray/Outdoor cats are responsible for slaughtering 6-12 songbirds (and squirrels, and bunnies, and other baby wildlife) DAILY. So no, I do not feel that a non indigenous species should be allowed to predate on actual indigenous wildlife. It was created and dumped because of humans, it should be humans that collect it up, treat it and rehome it.

Should humans provide handouts for wildlife...well, techincally no - not because of what most folks say about dependancy etc., but because it encourages wildlife to congregate in unusual numbers. This makes it more likely for illness to be contracted and spread (canine distemper, feline distemper, rabies, parasites such as fleas and worms), and can lead to huge die offs in certain species affected. The second problem is twofold. If you are not supported in your efforts, it is only a matter of time before a neighbor is calling pest control and having the offending (snacking) wildlife trapped and killed or dumped in an unsuitable release site. And, what happens when you die, sell or otherwise are no longer there. The new people will likely not be so enamoured with your wildlife buddies and the first thing on their agenda will be to put out poison, traps or otherwise eradicate the wildlife you have taught to trust....

Now there are exceptions...if an animals is injured or ill, yes, absolutely supplemental feed for a short period of time. Does the animal have young it is nursing? Then yes, for a short period of time while she is so desperate for calories. To do it daily, monthly, 365 days a year is because you enjoy seeing the wildlife, not because they 'need' your handout.

Hope that helps. Is it bad to feed the opossums?
You should stop. They'll start hanging out around your house and they can be quite mean.
Yes, it is bad to feed the opossums as it does mess with their natural feeding habits. Also, the next pandemic could be the ';opossum flu'; OP52 Virus???
gee that's a tough one
You should stop feeding the wildlife. They will find food elsewhere. If you don't stop feeding them, more and more of them will show up in your yard and then you will have to contact wildlife to come haul them off. They may get into your house and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. Also they could carry disease that you don't want either.Do not try to touch them,as they are wild and could bite you.I'm sure you have seen their teeth. They may look somewhat cute, but can be nasty.

Earlier this year, a raccoon and an opossum?

Earlier this year, a raccoon and an opossum wandered into two Southern California substations, causing a power-supply disruption that resulted in flaring at one refinery and an outage at another. With supplies in the Los Angeles market tight, the incident -- along with a host of other factors -- contributed to rise of a few cents per gallon in gasoline prices.

Do you think this is the cause of rising gas prices? a Racoon %26amp; opossum??Earlier this year, a raccoon and an opossum?
LOL. I'm cracking up over that question. Thanks.

Have you ever hugged an opossum?

Sure havent, I would rather keep my face attached to my head.Have you ever hugged an opossum?
NO!Have you ever hugged an opossum?
Oh yeah I hug them all the time. You have to be careful though that you don't squeeze to hard and kill them. Unless they are not really a possum like the guy on Ice Age- then you have an entirely different problem.
I have held one before. My mom worked at a state park and had to take care of one before. I know people think they are really gross but this one was a baby, it was kind of cute.
Don't feel like getting bitten with razor sharp teeth and getting infected and dieing. Thanks :-)
No, but I have had raccoons in my pants.
No, and I don't plan to.
ewww NO! Those things are just aweful %26amp; nasty looking....dirty little creatures!
nope..and I don't think that I ever will.
Nope, they have very sharp teeth. Don't think I'd want to try that.
Nope.

Ran over one once, but no hugs were involved.
OUCH!

And no.
No... but I had one run through my legs when BBQing a few winters back.
Yes, immediately after he bit my hand and would not let go. I hugged him with my other arm against my chest until he let go.

I was using my hand to clear dirt out of a hole I had dug the evening before and the ';possum'; bit my hand. I pulled the whole ';critter'; out and just gave him a big tight ';hug';. He let go and tried to bite my face. I suppose he wasn't the ';huggy'; type. I have not seen him since.
HAHAHA no.
no, I petted one once.
No, but I mugged an opossum
no
Yup. An ex-girlfriend of mine used to have a bunch of them as pets - they act tough for about 5 minutes after you catch them, after which they are as pliant as silly puddy.

They are still just as stupid after being domesticated as they are when they're in the wild, though.

how do we get rid of it?????We have an opossum living in our yard area?
We had one under our grill this summer and being we have two dogs, it scared the crap out of it and ran away.

If you don't have dogs, my suggestion is to make noise around wherever they sleep during the day, and this will make them leave. They don't like a lot of commotion in the area that they stay.

Call your local fish and game department.

The opossum, (Didelphis virginiana Kerr), was the first marsupial discovered by Western Europeans and is the only marsupial found in the United States.

Opossums playing and eating with my cats outside?

There's an opossum that comes out in my back yard every night, and the opossum will eat with my cats (both their heads in the food bowl at once) will lay day beside my cats, and occasionally plays with them (chase each other pounce on each other, and I'm pretty sure they are not hurting each other.) My mom thinks they are disgusting diseased oversized rodents, and always tries to shoot at them with bb guns. Should we be shooing them off? What harm could they cause? Opossums playing and eating with my cats outside?
Tape it before she shoots them, it would be fun to watch on youtube.Opossums playing and eating with my cats outside?
Tell your mom it's not okay to shoot animals. If she's that paranoid about them, she should trap and relocate them.

Call a wildlife rehabilitator. Often times, fish and game services will put the animals to sleep rather than relocate them. You need to contact a private rehabilitator to do the relocation. Possums can be tricky.Where should I relocate opossums in Virginia?
Call your local animal shelter or the Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. Be careful how you handle them. They may have rabies.

Have you ever dated an opossum?

I did, but only once. At dinner, I ordered an expensive cut of meat for her and she wouldn't eat it. However, she did eat her napkin and a portion of the tablecloth. Then she actually climbed up on the table and started eating my salad, without a fork. Afterwards, we went to my place and had some drinks. The sex was wild. She liked it when I nibbled on her tail while we were having sex. I offered to take her home, but she refused. Last time I saw her she was walking on my fence. I like to think of her as awesome opossum.Have you ever dated an opossum?

Can I have an opossum as a pet???

where can i get one, a small one?

Do they bite? Can I have an opossum as a pet???
you will have to go through an exotic pet trade to get one thats semi-domesticated. You cant take them from the wild, since you will need a license to own one. You dont want one because they are a wild animal and yes they DO bite. They can also carry rabies. So you have to be careful with it. They require special care and diets so they are not like owning a cat or dog. Please re-think this idea and leave the wild animals alone, get a ferret instead.

MARGE your wrong too. They are the most resistant but to say they NEVER get rabies, is completely wrong and false information you are possibly putting readers in harms way. DO more research that one website. I have raised orphaned Opossum and I can tell you THE DO carry rabies. Here is a cool sight about them.

    http://www.opossum.org/

I can also link sites just as easy as you canCan I have an opossum as a pet???
if you do, they can catch rabies easily. but I don't know, some ppl have skunks as pets
Check your state laws. You will probably have to have some kind of license to keep one.
First of all, the people who are telling you that possum carry rabies are wrong. The Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana), what we in North America know as a possum, has a lower than normal body temperature and does not contract or transmit the rabies virus.

These possums are wild animals, and it is illegal to keep one as a pet.

There are a number of non-native animals known as possums that are legal in some states, although there are many states that ban the possession of non-native marsupials. Check here for info on your state's laws: http://www.api4animals.org/b4a2_exotic_a鈥?/a>

Why do you want to scare a opossum? Why not just leave it alone? If it is getting into your pet's food then feed your pet so that the food is not available to the oppossum. Whatever it is doing to bother you just make a change in what you are doing so the temptation for the oppossum is no longer there.
Pick up a long stick or a rake or a shovel or something like that and swing it at them threateningly. Actually, they're kind of scared anyway, but their natural instinct is to freeze and hope not to be noticed. Make it obvious that you notice them and that you mean them harm and they'll flee. But you have to be careful. If you don't have a weapon in your hand they can hurt you worse than you can hurt them.

  • What does it mean to dream of an opossum chasing you?

It means you need to stop drinking whiskey before you go to work and move out of the trailer park.

Sorry, I couldn't resist..... That is just TOO darn funny.

An opossum? Never hear that one before.

Good luck! What does it mean to dream of an opossum chasing you?
You can out run one of those so don't sweat it.

It could be a cheeta. or a green mamba. or an ex.........What does it mean to dream of an opossum chasing you?
Quite often these types of dreams suggest that there is something in your life that you are running from. You must figure out what you don't want to do, learn, say, or feel and do it, in order to make the dream go away.

With it being an opossum that was chasing you, I would say that the issue is not something hugely threatening, as an opposum is not normally known as an agressive animal, but it sure is ugly!
Depends on what an opossum is to you. Is it a sneaky thing? A cute thing? Something that you dont understand? Dreams are personal things and the symbols in your dreams are just as personal.
As an opossum is a marsupial there is a link to the maternal pouch. I'd say you have a desire to become more independent from your mother...
You have a morbid fear of marsupials?
opossums are the only american marsupial, maybe the only marsupial outside of Australia, you are in big trouble
Was the opossum mean? Were you scared (I guess you were if you were running from it) Are you female or male? There are many interpretations of dreams, but it is always good to find out the feelings about the opossum, the setting, the colors, etc. It is hard to interpret dreams on the objects and actions alone. I will take a stab at it. The thing I think about opossums is that they are wild animals, they have ugly faces but they are also very fertile and marsuppials, which means they carry their young in their sac, of course. So I would say that if you are a straight guy, there is a young woman who you don't like (that you know of) that is interested in you. She is looking for a man to father her child and you are scared to death about it. If you are a woman, I would say you are having problems with your Mom, or, you are struggling with baby issues.
First, was the opossum alive or already dead on the highway? Were you running in slow motion while the opossum was running in regular motion?
Hey! Wake up! There's an opposum chasing you!

This Yahoo! Answers post--THAT'S the dream! There is no such website! Wake up!
The current trend to dream interpretation has to do with the dreamer's own take on the dream.

    1. What emotions were you feeling in the dream

    2. What could that opossum symbolize to you?

    3. Can you put the two answers together?
oo, a possum. well, in the two books i have, they are not specific to that particular animal; however, if memory serves me, possums aren't very fast and ';play dead'; to escape injury, etc. so, the first book has that being chased is a metaphor for insecurity. you may feel circumstances are closing in on you and you are at the mercy of feelings that are out of control. you should maybe stop running and face up to something. the second book simply has that chasing is a comfortable old age is forecast if you are chased or seeing a chase.

Find mother opossum dead babies still nursing on her. what to do help now?

Last spring our dog killed an opossum in our yard where it was eating our cats' food. We were shocked to find she had babies in her pouch and most of them fled after the mom was killed. We put the dog in his pen and corralled all the babies - 8 in all. My husband found a couple still in the pouch attached to her. We didn't know for sure what to do so we called our local humane society to get some advice. The nice man that answered said there was a woman in the county who does rescue care for opossums and he came out to get the babies, took the dead mother with him to dispose of, then delivered the babies to the woman who did the rescue care. It didn't cost us anything, but we sent the human society a donation in appreciation.Find mother opossum dead babies still nursing on her. what to do help now?
I agree call wild life rescue. If you are positive the mother is dead and not just ';playing'; You could put on some gloves and gently place the babies in a shoebox and take them if wildlife wont come out to get them, or will take too long. Many vets also serve as wildlife rescue drop off points and you can take them there as well. Call around. They dont usually charge, but may ask for a donation. I let my dog in the backyard.. and he saw this possum and just attacked it like the trex in jurassic park.. he bit it.. threw it to the ground.. hit it with his paws.. and then held it in his mouth and shook his neck violently and threw it back on the ground..then he came running back in the house all drooling and stuff...my dog did not get bitten.. but i want to know if my dog will get rabies?.. he got all his shots and stuff whatever is required... but he killed the possum tonite.. is it cool to let him just be?My dog killed an opossum..does he has rabies?
If he is current on his rabies shot, he will be fine.

Call your vet, because the call is free, to see if your should booster the rabies shot.My dog killed an opossum..does he has rabies?
If the dog had all of his rabie shots then you probably have nothing to worry about. but you might want to just take the possum and get it checked for rabies, just in case. or you can take your dog and get her checked for rabies. either way, it will take about ten days to get the results. make sure you give your dog a bath and if you would feel safer get an old toothbrush and some dog toothpaste. that really works with my dogs, but I've been brushing their teeth since they were six weeks old. I hope I've helped you!
get him to vet. Did you not get his shots? Maybe you should just in case it happens again.
check with the vet, but watch them closely til you can get them there. look for eating changes, bowel changes, mood changes
Take him to the vet to get a rabies shot, better safe than sorry.
Well if your dog gets ';all his shots'; I would expect that a rabies vaccine was included. Your veterinarian may want to booster him just to be safe. Having a dead animal rabies tested does involve decapitation - your local veterinarian or animal control officer can probably help with that. If your dog is not up to date on its rabies vaccine then a 10 day quarantine at a veterinary facility is an option - you cannot quarantine a potentially rabid dog in your HOME - I think the CDC would have a big problem with that.

You should see your veterinarian ASAP.

Oh, and a opossum is a marsupial - not a rodent.
Well I would take the dog and the dead opossum to the vet and have them both tested!
Ur dog will be fine---The back yard is his terrirtory--My dogs kill coons, possums and other varments. Your dog will be fine
u should take him to the vet if he acts funny, but he should b funny
no, I don't think the possum has rabies, well at lest the possum didn't die of rabies.

get the dog to a vet if you are concerned, but the dog should be OK
Please dont take ur dog to the vet to be tested for rabies...They would have to cut off his head, and I dont think he would be the same when u get him back...duh. But get the rodent checked, and make sure ur dog is up to date on his Rabies vaccine. The vet may want to update it either way. Or you could wait 10 days, keep ur dog confined - IN THE HOUSE WITH NO CONTACT to other mammals, and see is he starts havinf symptoms in about 10 days. Then u will definatley know.

Rat, Guinea pig, short tailed opossum,African dwarf dormice , corn snake, or small reptile(gecko or something)?

In a previously asked question these are the best pets i got, which do you think would be a good pet to be kept in a medium sized bedroom. I already have all the supplies for any of these animals, cages, tanks, sand, woodchips...all i need is to decide on what animal would be the next best pet.Rat, Guinea pig, short tailed opossum,African dwarf dormice , corn snake, or small reptile(gecko or something)?
You have the supplies for a rodent- not a reptile. For a reptile you're also going to need heat lamps or under tank heaters, hide spots, water dish big enough to soak in, temp and humidity gauges and feeding tongs for starters.Rat, Guinea pig, short tailed opossum,African dwarf dormice , corn snake, or small reptile(gecko or something)?

How can you get rid of opossums?

How can you get rid of opossums in your home and is it illegal in PA to kill them? How can you get rid of opossums?
Try a live trap. A friend of ours raised one, so I know they like things like scrambled eggs, so bait it with that or something else that might tempt it (even marshmallows). Once he's caught, take the trap out into the woods somewhere (far away) and set him loose. Be careful, though--those things can bite, so you might want to wear leather gloves as you let him go.

  • Have opossums been known to attack rabbits?

I have a pet rabbit living in a cage in our back yard. Every so often a family of opossums comes by to eat fruit from our fig tree. But, I am afraid that they may turn their attentions from our fig tree to our pet rabbit. These opossums can easily tear thru the cage if they wanted to. Any suggestions what to do?Have opossums been known to attack rabbits?
I really wouldn't worry about the rabbit unless it is a baby. The biggest thing that I have read about them eating are roof rats. As long as there are plenty of figs and small rodents and bugs around, the rabbit should be fine. Opossums are pretty big chickens, and rabbits aren't as sweet and docile as they seem to be.

I have seen opossums chasing after dogs and cats before, but that was because it was a mother protecting its babies. They hiss and chase when they are scared, but if they really think that they are in danger, they play dead ';hence the term, ';play opossum';.Have opossums been known to attack rabbits?
I've seen it happen when one has been aggravated.
yes-and it must be very scary for your rabbit-they have hands that can open a safe so protect and isolate your rabbit
I not think they will hurt the rabbit. They may look mean, but, they not. Now, backed into a corner one may fight out of fear.

When I lived in Texas years ago, we had a house on Lake Worth. There was this Opossum living under the house, as there were many animals around the lake when people looked. The neighbor had a cat and they were best friends. It was funny watching them play together. But they never hurt each other.
opossums are horibble little creatures..your rabbit is proably scared of them....make sure your rabbit is safe..some opossums have rabbies....i dont think your rabbit is in danger though, the opossums are scavengers and are perffectly happy with the fig tree..
It shouldn't bother your rabbit because they'd rather eat something already dead then have to kill it themselves. Plus they usually like fruits and vegetables the most anyway. If your bunny was a baby I would be more worried because they have been known to sometimes kill rats.
I had a bunch of chickens.. HAD..........I got a live trap , a leg trap, and a .22 cal. i no longer have chickens but i have less possums and raccoons too. (i always let the cats go)
Don't worry. The opposums will have no interest in your rabbit. They're strict vegetarians.
I can only say this because I have witnessed it. About a few months ago I witnessed a possum chasing a rabbit in my back yard here in NJ. I'm not sure if it was an attack or playing, but just be careful. Try to make sure you have heavy gage wire or metal for the cage or just move it closer to the house.

What's a good way to get rid of opossums without a gun?

I live in town and an opossum has moved under my house. There's an ordinance about using guns in town, so what's another good way to get rid of it?What's a good way to get rid of opossums without a gun?
Call your local dog pound. Most county animal control departments loan out big animal live traps.

Put the trap under the house with a chicken bone in it, and he will scurry right in and get caught. Take the trap out into the country and open the trap door, the opossum gets to see some new country and make new opossum friends. What's a good way to get rid of opossums without a gun?
Put a bottle of ammonia under your house.

I use an old water bottle filled half-way.

Stick a rag in it molotov cocktail style so it releases the odor without evaporating to quickly.

After a couple days they will not come back. Then just seal up where they are getting in.

If you really want it dead you can put down rat bait instead.
he could also make opossum enemies as well, since chances are you'll be releasing him/her in another's territory. animal/pest control knows best were to release. i suggest using whatever method keeps it out from under your house, if it is really causing problems. killing it isn't fair, nor is relocation, really.
Call a pest control specialist. They know how to handle pretty much every type of infestation. They will also determine how the animal got into the house, and prevent it from getting in the same way again.
Years ago, an opossum was bothering the people I was renting a room from. I don't know how they killed it, but afterwards, they roasted it. Treated it like a delicacy, passed out little bites.

What would happen if opossums went extinct?

I have to do a report for school about how certain animals effect an ecosystem. Please help! What would happen if opossums went extinct?
Removing a single species from a complex ecological network or ecosystem has unpredictable results. Oh, you could guess what some might be, but the entire system would adjust. For example, possums eat much of the same things as skunks. So an absence of possums should result in a surplus of skunks. But possums are more arboreal than skunks and probably eat insects and other prey that skunks cannot reach...such as bird chicks and eggs. So an increase in certain arboreal insect and bird species might also be expected.

You have to know a great deal about an entire ecosystem to predict such changes. And human responses must also be taken into consideration since we've become so much a factor in all ecosystems. What would humans do if possums went extinct and the skunk population doubled or tripled? Or if the main species of bird to benefit was the destructive starling? Or if the main insects to benefit were ones which killed certain trees?

Have fun with this one, kid. It will teach you to think in terms of cause and effect.

Try the local animal control officer. You can probably look up the State Troopers for your area and they can help you find one. How about a vet? Or the local zoo?

    Whatever you do, good luck!
Call the local Animal Control Center
Call aspca or animal control or LA county Forest service
keep the baby warm.. put it box.. with heating pad on low underneath.. give him a blanket to curl up in..

when he is warm to the touch... give him warm sugar water.. ( 1 part sugar.. 3 parts warm water) with a syringe or eye dropper.. do not feed him any cows milk! or human milk!

How to keep opossums out of the yard?

I don't want to catch them, I just want a way to keep them out of my yard. Almost every night opossums or maybe skunks or armadillos are digging in our yard. Is there anyway to keep them out of yard. Please let me know, please and thanks! How to keep opossums out of the yard?
I've been gardening in a rural area for 35 years, and know from sad experience that nothing works for any amount of time but a dog.

Repel works for me for deer, but I hybridize daylilies and only spray it on them--it would be too expensive to treat the whole perimeter of my property. I don't know if you'd have any success with it for your pests or not, but it's probably worth a try. You can get it at Lowe's and maybe some garden centers. How to keep opossums out of the yard?
I've never seen opossums digging- I think you've got armadillos. I think you should stay up late one night to see.

You need to figure out what kind of animal it actually is, and why it is digging, before you have a chance of understanding it well enough to get rid of it.
We have opossums and skunks, and I have never know the opossums to create a problem. The skunks do dig small round holes that look like someone poked a stick in the ground and twirled it around.

Skunks like to dig grubs, so perhaps if you treated the grubs they would go elsewhere. Good luck.
Put this sign up! When the critters see this, they'll think twice!

This isnt a great answer , but it is one I researched as I have a pet who kills them and I am tired of cleaning them up. My research was buying fox urine and putting it around their travel path (maybe outside of the room?) I have a dog and that doesnt keep them out, they are stubborn.Anyone have any tips to keep opossums out of my yard?
If you have pet food outside they can be coming to that. I had a problem with 2 opossums coming right up on my front porch eating cat food--huge fat ones, too. Try not leaving the pet food out overnight.

They will also come for food scraps or garbage. They're there for a reason. Something is ';attracting'; them.
Go to a hair salon and ask for the hair they sweep up. Take the hair and spread it around the yard. Wild animals will smell ';humans'; in the area and stay away.
Dorton is right. Get a trap. I used one to catch raccoons with one. Set it by the house with an egg in it for bait.
Don't leave any food out there, for anything.
get a live trap.bait it and catch it. then take it about 5 miles away and turn it loose........

My dog attacked an opossum and its laying in by backyard, help.?

my dog is fine and it didnt bite him but my dog had it in his mouth and I just checked on it and its laying there still breathing. my dad said its just playing dead but im worried it might be hurt. what do I do?My dog attacked an opossum and its laying in by backyard, help.?
Contact Animal Control. They will come and take care of it. If you don't have Animal Control in your area, then you can call your local non-emergency police. My dog attacked an opossum and its laying in by backyard, help.?
It probably is playing dead. Possums are known to play dead if attacked or frightened to ward off enemies, hence the saying ';Playing possum.'; If you can, you could probably take it (careful, so it won't bite) and release it. If you are scared or can't take it without it biting call the fire department or an animal shelter/control. Be sure to call the non emergency number.
Opossums do play dead, but chances are your dog has injured it. Did you know dog and cat saliva is toxic to these animals? I work at a wildlife rehab center and opossums come in a lot after dog and cat attacks. If you are unsure if he is 'playing possum' you could throw some water on him- but gently and not in his face. If he is okay I THINK he would get up, but I am not sure. DO NOT touch him. Opossums are actually pretty docile so he probably wouldn't attack you (unlike raccoons). But your dog could have fractured his skull, punctured a lung, broken bones, etc. Your dad could be correct, but chances are your dog has hurt him. If so, you need to get him to a wildlife emergency clinic. Look in the yellow pages for exotic or wildlife vets or rehab centers. Don't let him lay there all night... opossums only play dead until the danger is gone.
Are you in a rabies area?? If so don't touch it and get hold of your local SPCA. They should have an emergency ph number.

If your not in a rabies area, just keep an eye on it every now and again.

The old saying ';playing possum'; came about because possums do play dead very well.

I'd keep the dog away from the possum till it either leaves or someone comes to collect it.

There is not much chance that your dog wasn't bitten or scratched, so get him off to the vet for a check up tomorrow.

Ps, how can all you other guys get away with those naughty answers???I do it once to a asker being silly, and get in trouble??
Your dad is probably right. The opossum is just playing dead...just leave it there for now..or put it in a safe place in case ur dog is still going to go after it..and if it is gone by the morning he should be fine. Opossums cant wake up from playing dead right away...it can take several hours..maybe days.
All you can do is wait and see. If it's a wild animal then there's not much you can do for it other than put it out of its misery (if it's fatally wounded).
you should probably call animal control and let them know. they may be required to come out and get it from your yard, as it may have diseases or something. just keep an eye on it and take the advice of control.
Don't worry about the possum. Your dog may look okay, and he may be okay. But get him checked for rabies and other diseases.
Possums are mean and nasty little creatures.

I'd make sure that if your dog was not bitten, he wasn't scratched either.

Be more worried about your dog.
It's most likely just ';Playin Possum'; if it doesn't get up and move within an hour or so, kill it. They are some tough sob's so he's just faking.
Ha...a possum playing its own game. I think it fooled ya. Seeing that it's only a possum, check tomorrow morning or way later tonight.
Its a defensive mechanism, they play dead so predators wont harm them. opossums are nasty anyways, its fine.
yeah its probably playing dead but if you are really worried you can call animal control.
Yeah there's a lot I can do from London, call your local wildlife shelter and ask their advice.
i think if you are really worried you should phone a vet for advise, its better to be safe than sorry!!
See if you can fit it in your bum.
just wait... it is playing dead... it will be ok.
    Call peta.
call your local wildlife rescue poor opossum :(
don't worry about it. they play dead when threatened.
Throw it against a window and see what happens. I once saw one fly into the window during a very windy night while I was in the library. It was a very big moment in my life.
Good. Opossums eat our stuff. And they're ugly.

Just throw it in your neighbors yard..or call animal control (they charge you though).

Your neighbors might want a pet..

I don't want to hurt them or the family i just want them gone...spca or wildlife will not come out and help. thank you.How do i get rid of opossums under trailer?
I once got rid of a family of skunks by using Air Freshener. They did not like the smell of it! Try Shake Away

    http://www.critter-repellent.com/possum/鈥?/a>

The best way I have used to get rid of possums, is to borrow a dog, and tie it up close to the spot where the possums are doing the most activity. They will head for the hills, then you can return the dog. You and your neighbors need to be careful with feeding pets outdoors. Garbage cans should be covered, and the lids kept on with a bungee cord. Critters go where there is food. My latest problem is with the Armadillos digging tunnels. How do i get rid of opossums under trailer?
Mothballs thrown under the trailer, bleach poured around, Hav-a-hart traps to live trap. Could also be a raccoon unless you have seen a possum. When it is gone, put the ground sides around the trailer tightly. Plus, you can kill and eat either of those animals mentioned. I am not kidding or being demeaning. I have eaten both. Check the local papers to see if someone will remove them for you cheaply. I wish you luck
Once you get rid of the opposum using all these great suggestions, go to your local dog groomer and ask if they will save their clippings for a couple of days for you. Take the dog hair and put it just inside your skirting all the way around, this will make the critters think you have a dog. Its worth a try and its free.
In would get someone to crawl under and spray it with a water hose, use a mild pressure nozel and give em a blast. Good Luck!
Get a Have-a-heart trap and use cut up apples as bait. Once you catch them release them far away.
I have read all of the answers and they are good- if it is possible (without making trouble in your park) the dog is the best then when the critter is gone put up the skirting very tightly- the trap is the second best (only because it's more work) I used to live in the country and that was what I did
you might try spreading mothballs all over the ground under the trailer. this works for snakes and most bugs....also ran a family of skunks away! once it's gone from under the trailer, keep a ring of the mothballs just at the edges all the way around to discourage him from coming back. just be sure to check frequently to see if the mothballs need replenishing.

Are Opossums bad to encounter in the neighborhood? Do they attack like raccoons and carry a disease?

Do opossums attack like raccoons? Do they carry a disease like rabies? Do they make good pets? Can you touch / pet / feed them when they're out in the neighborhood? Are Opossums bad to encounter in the neighborhood? Do they attack like raccoons and carry a disease?
I have never heard of an opossum or even a raccoon attacking anyone, at least where I live and we see them often. Usually they are more fearful of us and will run if we approach.

They can carry rabies and other diseases and it's never wise to try to approach one or even feed them.

I don't see too many opossums but I get about 3-4 raccoons on my back patio each night trying to eat my cat's food or get into my garbage can. I've had to make sure my cats were inside in the evening and take their food in.

Opossums are not meant to be pets and it would be practically a death sentence for them if you or anyone else try to keep one as a pet, same with raccoons. Are Opossums bad to encounter in the neighborhood? Do they attack like raccoons and carry a disease?
an opossum is wildlife and it is illegal for you to be in possession of one. they hiss. do not try to turn one into a household pet as it will not work out for you. opossums are not rabies vector animals.

Any mammal can get rabies. However, the chance of rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE. This may have something to do with the opossum鈥檚 low body temperature (94-97潞 F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum鈥檚 body.
yeah, treat them like you would a raccoon dont touch it or pet it or feed it. because if you feed it, it will most likely stay longer
they can be rabid but will usually run from people and pets. we are a much bigger threat to them than they are to us. Do not approach them however.
    yes they could have rabies
Not so sure but they are pretty ugly

Cats? Shame? Are you serious?? LOL!!

All kidding aside, when a cat rolls over on its back in front of you, he is saying, ';I trust you implicitly.'; A cat's belly is his most vulnerable spot and for him to roll over on his back is a compliment to you. However, it's NOT an invitation to pet the tummy! You can try, but be prepared for a swat or scratch-- better to try the chest!

You said ';he';, so I assume your cat is a boy. Females in heat will also roll over on their backs as a form of foreplay.
One of my cats was flopped like that, just slightly hanging over the edge of my bed. When he stretched, he fell of the bed. If not shamed, I'm sure he was embarassed!
I own a cat named Possum.
No. One living at my place does the same. They are attention whores.
My cat does this too...it also waits til company comes over, then it sits in the middle of the floor, hikes its legs up over its head, and starts giving itself a douche. It ONLY does this when it has a captive audience.
    Awe.....ain't that just sooo sweet??????

My wonderdog would never do such an ungraceful thing.
Evidently not. My cat does that all the time too. He also likes to clean himself (his privates) when ever I have a friend or date over. Go figure them out.

    Raccoon or opossum?

there is a tree in my backyard that was ripped up pretty good and the bark was taken. I believe it was a raccoon or a opossum. Anyone have a better idea? This is the suburbs of Michigan.

and if you do know what one it might be what is a good, humane, way to rid the backyard of such a pest.

    ThanksRaccoon or opossum?
I've had both and you really would have to describe the animal you are seeing to do it. Either way you can discourage them from coming into your yard with coffee cans with punched holes in the top and around the sides filled with ammonia soaked rags. I'm fighting possums (pink tail) right now from establishing my yard as their home base and our fish and game recommends this method to not only deter opossums, but bobcats and racoons that we also have in the area.Raccoon or opossum?
hate to burst the bubble of these people that answered but, it was a porcupine
You would need to put out a live trap......put it near the tree and put some bread in it...then take the varment into the bigger woods and turn it loose....
    Sounds more like a bear
I have a bark ripping problem with squirrels. Squirrels would be my guess. There's probably not much you can do about raccoons and 'possums other than keep your area free of food sources (kitchen trash). Better to view them as gifts of Nature rather than pests. They have their place and we all have to share.

  • Is it proper to put ';an'; before the word opossum even though the O is silent?

the O is not silent in some cultures.. but here in the US it is so 'a' is the proper way to do it.Is it proper to put ';an'; before the word opossum even though the O is silent?
Well, actually the 'o' isn't silent in the word opossum; you must pronounce it. And yes, put 'an' in front of it.

Now, if you use the form 'possum' as many, if not most, people do, then you use 'a' in front of it.

A possum but an opossum! Is it proper to put ';an'; before the word opossum even though the O is silent?
No, the sound is what matters, not the letter.

    Just like it is ';an honor,'; even though honor starts with an ';h.';
i think its not required to put ';an';!
The O isn't silent. Many people say possum but it isn't the correct pronunciation. Regardless of sound 'an'; belongs there.
when 'O' is silent then sound of 'P' does not require 'an'
Is this a trick question? I think if you write the word opossum you'd put an 'an' in front of it. If you spoke the word opossum in a sentence you'd leave it out. I don't like to talk about opossums though because one hissed at me one time and scared the heck out of me............I always pronounced the O in it though so now I'm really confused.

    Is possum plural for opossum?

or whats the difference? Is possum plural for opossum?
Possum is the short form of opossum. The plural can be either opossums or opossum. Is possum plural for opossum?
Possum is a shortened version of opossum. It originated from the hillbilly vernacular. Opossum is the correct way to say it. Two or more of them are opossums. Any way you say it, they are nasty little creatures! hope this helps
Nope, it's opposum(s). 'possum is just a shorter version, mainly because the initial 'o' vowel is soft and often gets dropped.

I found a baby opossum or rat? Please Read!!!?

My friend and I found a baby rat, thats what I think it is, i searched pics...... We made a nest out of papers and put it in the grass. I want to take it home, if it is still alive tommorow. It is very small, light brown skin and some whiskers on its face and it has a small cut on its arm. Would it be safe to take it if it survived the night outside? Do you think it has any diseases? ThanksI found a baby opossum or rat? Please Read!!!?
Aww I feel bad for the poor creature it neds help but you should not keep it as a pet because it is wild but you can foster it untill it gets better but dont pick it up with just your hands it might bite or have rabbies but please help it it sounds so weak. Maybe just call animal control and they will come get it and hopefully help it back to recovery if you cant. What I am trying to say is help the poor thing but be careful!

Good LuckI found a baby opossum or rat? Please Read!!!?
    do not keep it

it is a wild animal who probably has a mother

it most likely will have rabies anyways

i know they are cute but trust me do not keep it
my mom did this when i was a child.. she found the cutest little baby rat.. or mouse not really sure.. any way she took it home and put it is a bird cage.. but it got out.. and when could not find it.. a few months later the frig broke and when they were moving it the rat ran across the room and the dog caugth it.. killed it..but not before the rat bit it.. soon after the dog became mean.. and we had to tie it up and keep it away from the family.. the animal control was called out and took the dog away.. it had rabies.. ..leave it where you found it.. this is not a house pet but a wild animal.. if you really want to do something for it.. then take it to the animal hospital and drop it off.. or the local shelter.. but i would leave it alone.. just picking it up i could bite you
o my goddddd take it ito ur house now or else it will freeze too death. :( :( :( :( :( :( p.s sorry for sounding sooo mean!
What ever it is a rat or a posum leave it where it is . Do not touch it or move it . This is not a pet it is a wild animal and needs to be left alone . If it lives or dies that is how life is . It could have rabies or even worse .

How can I safely get rid of a opossum family? I do not want my two dogs to kill them.?

my two dogs brought a baby opossosum in my home . thank god it was stunned so I took it back outside. please help me I do not want them killedHow can I safely get rid of a opossum family? I do not want my two dogs to kill them.?
Trap the mother with a Hav -A - Hart trap and gather the babies in a box and take them to a wooded area to release them. If you call someone to come and get them,be warned, many of these ';nuisance trappers '; just kill the animals and it is perfectly legal. They drown them, electrocute them, club them or inject chemicals into their lungs. It's terrible. You could also walk your dogs on leashes until the opossums leave on their own.How can I safely get rid of a opossum family? I do not want my two dogs to kill them.?
Yep animal control do not ever go near a possum they have very sharp teethe and are very dangerous, i was attacked by one who was hiding in my trashcan!! haha lol. I called animal control they trapped it and said they would release it in the woods
Call Animal Control. They'll get them resettled somewhere.
We had possums moving into our den, which is on a slab floor, and setting up housekeeping. Our cats avoided them Animal control recommended spraying ammonia around where they could enter, which worked. They don't like it, doesn't hurt them, and the smell (for humans) goes away fast. One good thing, possums eat snails and slugs, so be careful about using snail and slug poison.

How do you take care of an opossum?if it's sick?

how do you take care of an opossum if it's badly hurt and it was ran overHow do you take care of an opossum?if it's sick?
You need to leave it where it currently is. Oppossums carry a great deal of disease including, but not limited to rabies. Call a wildlife rehab center or your local DNR (Department of natural resources) officer. How do you take care of an opossum?if it's sick?
Take it to a veterinary hospital ASAP. Those are wild animals and you have no idea what you are getting into.
you need to call the local game/wildlife office. they will know what vets will be able to handle the needs of a wild animal. or also call animal control. they would know whom to send out to help.

    just as an after thought:

there are a lot of ppl answering to kill this poor animal...humans are so cruel, thanks for reminding me why i respect my animals more than ppl!!!!
It's not up to you-You need a specialist who knows how to manage wild animals.
I know what Granny, Jed, Jethro, and Elly May would do with him...
Shoot it, and then bury it. It could have rabies and who knows what else.

  • What too feed a opossum ?

My son found this critter in the drive . I has its eyes open makes noises %26amp; washes itself. I didn't know what too feed it so I gave it warm milk (pasturized) and had my son catch flies to feed it. What does it need besides holdind my finger when I give it milk .What too feed a opossum ?
Many possums have invaded my garage to eat dry dog food. If it's still a baby and you want to keep it alive, try mixing a canned food with the milk at first. When you're ready to stop feeding it, call the local Animal Control officer or your County Extension office. Please remember that it's wild, so it will be riddled with parasites. Doesn't make a very good pet. What too feed a opossum ?
The virginia opossum is a successful opportunist and is found throughout North America from coast to coast (introduced to California in 1910), and from Central America and Mexico to southern Canada and seems to be still expanding its range northward. It is often seen near towns, rummaging through garbage cans, or lying by the side of the road.

Opossums are scavengers and will eat pretty much anything...even other opossums that are dead on the side of the road.
Opossums are omnivores, which means they will eat a variety of foods including insects, meat, and vegetation. Regular milk is not nutritious enough for a young opossum. Try baby formula or pablum. If it looks like its teeth are fully grown in, try a mixture of wet %26amp; dry catfood. This would be an appropriate diet to keep it on afterwards.
Try canned cat food or warm milk in a small bowl.
possoms are omnivores insects are good but some fruit will help for vitamins and minerals.

    How do you pronounce ';opossum';?

As in the animal? I asked this yesterday and i got really confused.

    So is it pronounced:

    OH-PAW-SUM

Or do you NOT pronounce the ';O'; in the beginning?

    Like: PAW-SUM?

Help please? Oh yeah, and i'm Canadian by the way so idk the proper way to pronounce it.How do you pronounce ';opossum';?
It's not OH-pawsum for sure. It's uh-POS-um. In some dialects, and also because the word is frequently shortened to Possum, it's pronounced POS-um. Here's this note on the first ';uh';:

Although many American dialects feature aphesis, it is most famous in the dialects of the South, where it yields pronunciations such as count of for (on) account of, tater for potato, possum for opossum, and skeeter for mosquito. How do you pronounce ';opossum';?
I would think it is pronounced as - Or (O) Po (po) Serm (Ssum)

(Example: how you would pronounce Opponent).

Please I am giving a speech tonight, and I am trying to save an important area from land Development.

I really need to know if you have ever seen one, and if so where, what time of day, and how big were the ones you have seen?

get along with cats but dogs often kill them (as do cars because they saunter along and don't run fast)Have you ever seen an Opossum ?
Yes, I have seen them. Minnesota and Wisconsin, mostly farm country, though still occuring as you get closer to the suburbs. They are most commonly on the roads as they come out of the woods. Mostly at night, I have never seen one during the day. Its mostly Opossums and Deer that I see on the side of the road (dead) and I have to admit, I did accidently run one over myself (I also did stop, and make sure it was dead) The ones that I have seen seemed to be full body weight, didnt seem to have any malnutrition, about a foot long or so? Most of the time I was driving so I couldnt say for sure.

    Hope that helps.
I see them all the time. Usually every spring one near my house has babies and they always manage to hang themselves from my back porch. I know I shouldn't but I unhook their little tails and put them in near a tree or something so my dogs don't find them. I live in central Pennsylvania, I see at all different times and I have seen them from babies (about 6 inch bodies) up to adults the biggest being probably about 15 pounds and maybe 12-15 inches long-not including the tail
Yes I saw one in Bucks County PA about a half mile from Van Saint Airport. She was in the middle of the road in the middle of the afternoon. Her tail was up over her back and six little ones were riding on her back with their tails rapped around her tail. She was about the size of a small cat and the babies bodies were three and a half to four inches long. So adorable.
    Yes.

i have seen tons. i live in north west Florida, about an hour above Panama City[if you know where that is:)]

i see them quite often accually. they are all around where i live, and they've came up and started munching down on cat food right along with our cats. We usually see them out at night. :)

Yes. I was little, in my shore house by a bay/woods.

Opossum or Racoon in the walls!?

There is an animal inbetween the 1st floor and basement ceiling. We can hear it crawling and clawing around. We know where it got in and we set up a trap for tonight. I know its alive b/c I can hear it right now moving around.

There is now a funny smell coming from my vents and I'm pretty sure its because it went to the bathroom up there. What do I do?!Opossum or Racoon in the walls!?
i think your doing the best solution possible but remember when using a trap check it before daylight animals get nerves when daylight comes about and that's when they chew their limbs off so if possible try to use a live trap and squirrels get into houses alot as well.Opossum or Racoon in the walls!?
Be sure to use ';Have A Heart'; traps. The animal is not injured and neither are you. It is a cleaner and kinder way to handle the capture

Be cautious, they are treacherous and do not want to be cornered.

I had the same thing exactly and they are so smart that they use their paws to open the old air vents at the crawl spaces and crawl up the wall or penetrate the attics where mine were.

FYI, if they die in the attics or between walls, you Willl have a smell that wil drive you from your home for 2 months.

SO, what I did was; went to the opening they used for entry, secured all the others and placed food outside the hole and placed/built a trip door on springs so when the varmint wanted to get in, he couldn't and when he came out with little effort it closed again and couldn't return. soon to rid yourselves of some or all of the Lil squatters.

NOTE: if you don't get the Lil ones and they die, hope you have mice that will eat them or Ferrel cats that will take them away.

Its a job and you have yours cut out for you.

    Happy hunting.
Call animal control and let them know. They can tell you what to do from there.

Don't be mean and shot the opossum. Try to trap it. Call a nursery or hardware store...see what they sell. Opossum are not a mean animal. They are friendly.
You should be able to live-trap the animal and take it far far away from your home then release it.

What can I feed the opossum that is in the backyard every night? ?

Possums eat whatever you give them including table scraps.

    @@@@@@

';So what do you do if you find one of these creatures in your backyard. Pretty much you just leave them alone. Why? They are really good for your backyard. They are going to be eating those things you probably don't want to have around like cockroaches, snails and rodent nestling's. Hey did you know these guys will even eat rattle snakes? Yep, they are immune to the venom of the rattle snake. Now the Opossum is an Omnivore. Omni means all and vore means eater so it is eating all kinds of things. It is eating plants and animal material in its diet just like a human being so you might be a little bit concerned about what kind of plants it is eating in your backyard. Fear not! It is going to be eating those over ripe fruits and vegetables that fall to the ground. You know the stuff that is black and getting rotten. Okay you might say aren't they arboreal or aren't they in the trees? Well they do climb in the trees to get from place to place and pretty much they are going off there to get away from predator like you and your dog. So these guys are really good at cleaning up your backyard because not only are they eating that rotten fruits and vegetables on the ground, they are also eating carrion and carrion is a nice way of saying an animal that is already dead.';What can I feed the opossum that is in the backyard every night? ?

  • I just found a baby opossum?

Can I pick it up? i found one yesterday like it and i took it to a nature center. The outher one seemed nicer and this one is hissing at me. But theres no mom around and without its mom its gonna die. Its about as big as a peincle. If I pick it up will it bite me?I just found a baby opossum?
Put on gloves than pick it up at let the ppl at the nature center take care of the rest.I just found a baby opossum?
give it some food and give it a bed but make sure you put on gloves first
glovesssss and watch out for its teeth! dont let em getcha.
Leave it be, and let nature take its course. He will bite your *** in a heartbeat...
yes you should help it or it will die, it wont hurt much if it bites you. you might just get a disease but i'll be worth it if you save its life
    dont hurt it tough!
well his mom is probably somewhere around or maybe he can survive with out her. otherwise capture it take it 2 the nature center.
    Opossums are foul, vile creatures.

Put it in a gunny sack with a rock and throw into a large body of water.
You really don't want to chance it. Wild animal bites are not something you want to fuss with.

Get a towel and toss it over the possum, then carefully get it into a pillow case, (drop it in with the towel if you have to) or cat carrier, if you have one and take it to the wildlife center.

    Good Luck
Your local nature center,SPCA or animal control will know what to do --give them a call. Please be very careful with wildlife- rabies is on the rise and global!
yes use a coplof gloves on one hand and grab it behined the neck
get a fising net and capture the animal then put in a cage please dont handle it because it will bite and u could get rabies or some other kind of diease

I have a opossum living around my house and would l like to know who I might contact about helping to catch it

I live in the Sacramento California area and do not not want to hurt this animal but simply try and relocate him to anothe area where he can find a better food source.I have a opossum living around my house and would l like to know who I might contact about helping to catch it
Most local animal control offices (city /county government) will not do this for you. They may offer you a humane trap, or you may have to purchase one. bait and set the trap. When the animal is caught, take it to the countryside and release. Do not release anywhere within a couple of miles, it may well find it's way back to your home if it has an established nest.

Note - they nurse their young, so if it's a female and has milk, you may want to turn it loose again at your home until after the babies have weaned (assuming you want to protect the babies too). Of course, this means that you'll have many more to catch ...I have a opossum living around my house and would l like to know who I might contact about helping to catch it
You may be able to get an animal control officer to set a trap, or a pest control operator specializing in animals to do the same. The 'possum appears to have found a very satisfactory food source. In this area (Frederick, MD) they are quite common, even in residences near downtown.
also check the yellow pages for wildlife--some people trap wildlife and relocate them as a business.
I had the similar problem, only it was a raccoon. Your best bet short of killing it is to rent a live trap from your local animal shelter, or call the game warden to have it removed.
Here at Humboldt County Animal Control we deal only in domestics. The Deptartment of Fish and Game deal with all the wild animals. Call your local shelter and get referred.
    http://www.wildlife-removal.com/faq.htm

They have the proper licensing to live trap and relocate nuisance wildlife. And they, unlike animal control or the police, will not destroy the animal.
The Humane Society....ASPCA can advise you...
well don't touch it cause it might bite u or go near it. i guess u can call anyone u think that might be an expert on opossums.

Is it opossum or a possum?

I MUST KNOWIs it opossum or a possum?
Technically, they are separate animals with similar names. Sometimes, opossums will be referred to as possums. Is it opossum or a possum?
It should be opossum. However, so many people spelled the word wrong that either spelling is considered correct. Having an English degree, I think this is pretty sad. It's just like ';have gone'; and ';have went.'; After awhile, too many people were using ';have went,'; and now it's considered correct even though it's truly an error in grammar.

There is a ';possum'; though. The cousin of the opossum: the possum found in Australia (and introduced to New Zealand). If you look up the word ';possum,'; you find that it's considered an informal spelling of opossum. This is an educated way of saying it's spelled wrong, but who cares. We'll accept it since numberless people spell it wrong. :)
It depends on where you are... if you're in Australia, they are possums. If you're in the Americas, it's an opossum (but usually pronounced without the ';o';), while they're both marsupials, they're not the same animal.
';Opossum'; is the official spelling, derived from an Algonquian term meaning ';white beast';. ';Possum'; is just an informal shortening of the word.
I am pretty sure you write it with the O - Opossum and when you say it you drop the O. -- Possum. At least that's how we do it in my part of the country.
    Both

    But Australia usually uses ';possum';
'possum is a contraction of opossum.
    OPOSSUM
    an opossum. :)
you can use either one but it is better if you say a possum.
    either
    BOTH

So is it a BIGFOOT or is it a BIGFOOTED OPOSSUM?

They say that the DNA results came back as being 2% Human %26amp; 96% opossum. Well that doesn't sound like normal DNA. So what does these results make it?

yeah I know I'm in the wrong section but I figured y'all could use a break from politics anyway. ;-)

So is it a BIGFOOT or is it a BIGFOOTED OPOSSUM?
Naw just Michelle Obama. So is it a BIGFOOT or is it a BIGFOOTED OPOSSUM?
You shouldn't be disrespecting possums by posting in the political section.
They make a big opossum but has human parts but very little but they show it is big and probable hair grew all over it
It's got to be a hoax or they'd just present the body.
Yeah a little break never hurt

That makes it a hupossom or an

    opossman
John McCain says its a disguised AL QUEDA operative.
    I think Big Possum

Sugar glider or short tailed opossum?

help i dont know what to get, but i want the smarter, and more attention needy one.Sugar glider or short tailed opossum?
sugar glider... since opossums only live for about 2 years, they grow FAST !!!!!!!!! but you can try a baby squirrel... AWWW...Sugar glider or short tailed opossum?
Neither should be owned as pets. They may be cute/cool, but it's just not responsible to own exotics. Get a small dog from a shelter. They can be needy and they show more affection than a sugar glider or possum.
Opossum's are wild animals and have very very sharp teeth and humans can not meet the opossum's needs

What FOODS are safe to leave for OPOSSUM that comes to my front door every night? Read dry cat food harmful!?

This website discusses the dangers of feeding an improper diet:

http://www.opossumsocietyus.org/metaboli鈥?/a>What FOODS are safe to leave for OPOSSUM that comes to my front door every night? Read dry cat food harmful!?
They like table scraps and canned cat food, not dry. They are carrion eaters. What FOODS are safe to leave for OPOSSUM that comes to my front door every night? Read dry cat food harmful!?
    Fruit and vegetables.
if trash tastes good it don't matter. and cat food will not harm them , that's a myth
You should research what its diet is. Go around in the woods and collect it. Leave a pile of it. It would probably just slow it down if you fed it any human food.
Well, a 'possum will eat just about anything, but they are particularly fond of PERSIMMONS. You can find them at most international markets and some of the regular grocery stores.

Be careful and don't try to pet this thing,.. he'll bite the crap out of you!

    -----
Possums will eat anything. Like hot snake I had a possum in my back yard. It actually lived in the dog house. Ate my dogs food and any scraps that I put out. Even stayed in there with the dog. After a while he didn't even curl up and play dead when I came out. Found out a little while later the old lady that owned the house before me had found him as a baby and raised him. I never did try to pet him because they can be very nasty. Good luck to you and your possum
why on earth do you want to feed an opossum?
I saw this question and had to answer it. Opossums will eat just about anything and cat food (dry, wet or canned) will not hurt them one bit and for a opossum, having a regular food source is a blessing.

    Now for the story:

Not too many years ago, I lived out in the country (no, I am talking about WAY OUT in the country -- 10 miles to the nearest store kind of way out). I had yard cats (7) and would feed them on the concrete walk at night and after a while I had opossums (3) that came to dinner and a short time later skunks (2) as well. I enjoyed watching them eat -- cat, cat, skunk, cat, opossum, cat ( you get the idea). After a while, I could walk out among them all, cats, skunks and opossums and none of them even cared that I was among them.

You may find that after a short amount of time you will have a yard pet (or several) that you did not intend on having but any interaction with wildlife can create a lifetime of nice memories. Enjoy.
