What to do if my dog killed a opossum?

My dogs have killed a total of 4 opossums in a weeks period. The PROBLEM is that I just noticed their rabies shot was due last month. Is it to late to have their rabies shot updated? What to do if my dog killed a opossum?
The absolute truth of the matter is....

rabies shots are good for FAR longer than a year's time....

...there are studies that say that a vaccination for rabies actually

protects a dog for up to three years....

It is simply the vet's way of getting annual income from people

so...they have lobbied and found acceptance with the annual

shots being required by most city and county code officials....

Don't worry about it

get them vaccinated soon (to comply with the law)

but... don't worry about this situation that you've brought up here....

And.. dogs will be dogs

opossums will be opossums

and... never the two shall mix !!

The Opossum is by far less likely to have diseases than a dog so it's the opossum that got bit and not killed by your dog that has to worry. Even the rabies mongers that think rabies hides in every corner put the opossum at the bottom of the list @ one in eight hundred and even this number was extrapolated using a formula of probability since none of the tested opossum actually had rabies.! A more prudent question might be WHY ARE YOUR DOGS KILLING THINGS ? Mine don't !

Cats yes, --- dogs not so much.
No, get to the vet %26amp; get their rabies shots though. I live in NC %26amp; here, if you get the rabies shot renewed before it runs out, the new shot will be good for 3 years, but if it runs out, the new shot is only good for one year, so its more cost effective also to get shots on time as then you don't have to get them as often.

Are your dogs running loose or did they kill these opposums in your yard? If they are running loose, you really should fence or kennel them whenever a person isn't with there to monitor them, as they could kill other peoples pets.
Fix your private fence to keep the wildlife out. Possums stay low to the ground, you have a hole somewhere that they can easily get in by,so it has to be at least 6'; wide. Block it.

Possums rarely carry rabies, their body temp is too low for the virus to stay in their system, they're one of the very few mammals that this can be said about. Raccoons are the far worse spreader, and if a possum can get in, a raccoon certainly can as well.
It's not too late. The antibodies don't magically evaporate at exactly 365 days. Just get it done as soon as possible, and maybe consider finding a way to stop your dog's massacre of the local wildlife.
Make an appointment and have their rabies shots done, your dogs should be fine.
