What's the difference between a possum and an opossum???

just curious. What's the difference between a possum and an opossum???
North America's lone marsupial is the opossum (pronounced as ';possum';). In other areas, there are other marsupials that are also called ';possums'; and they are spelled without the ';O'; at the beginning.

In south america there is a short-tailed possum, and a mouse possum, among others; and the south pacific is home to numerous species such as the sugar glider (similar to our flying squirrel in appearance, though it is a possum).

Some texts denote the new world species as ';true possums'; and lump the rest into another taxonomic group (sorry, can't remember the name of it), but they are all called possums in one spelling or another. What's the difference between a possum and an opossum???

I believe it's the mis spelling of one.
Possum is the incorrect spelling of opossum.
They have possums in the South

and opossums everywhere else.
In North America we have Virginia opossums. People call them possums but their technical name is opossum.

Good question!
