I wouldn't use a foot snare though. Find a path that you know the animal travels and hang the snare at the hight were that animals head will be and make the loop a little bit larger than the intended prays head. When it's head goes through the loop it will feel the wire, panic, then try to bolt causing the snare to close. The more it fights the tighter it gets and it will eventually strangle itself. This way you don't have to worry about dealing with an angry and very much alive opossum with its foot in a snare. If you use thinner wire than what is used in the link you don't really need to do that whole washer lock thing. Just make a slipknot and wrap the excess wire back around itself so it looks kind of like a hangman's noose. The animal will pretty much always keep fighting until it's dead so you really don't need the lock.

what the guy right above me said is correct, i have a different way.

Take a log, or tree stump. and drill a whole in it big enough to put something in. Make it to where the inside of the hole is bigger than the outside(by moving drill bit back and forth) but try not to widen the entrance of the hole. put whatever you want to catch the coon or rabbit with(not sure if it works with opossums, but wouldn't doubt it.) inside the hole, and make a trail that leads up to the hole.

they will put their hand inside the hole to grab the food, but will not let go.

make sure to check the trap often. because im sure after a while, they possibly could let go.

This works for me and im sure it will work for you.
theres a story in were the red fern grows that you can take 2 horseshoe nails and pound them into a hollow log and stick a piece of tin foil in the log so that the raccoon can get his paw into the log but can't get it out of the log without letting go the thing is its supposed to be too greedy to let go and will hold on i've heard they do a similar kinda thing with monkeys in rain forests idk its worth a shot but i'm not sure
Just like this one and if you want you can make it smaller.
