Is it legal to own an opossum as a pet in Texas? If so, can I catch one?

I was thinking of getting an opossum and I live in Texas. But I have no idea if it's legal! If it is, how do you you catch one? And what do they eat?Is it legal to own an opossum as a pet in Texas? If so, can I catch one?
Omg, they are horrible animals, dirty disease ridden and violent. You are asking for rabies. Is it legal to own an opossum as a pet in Texas? If so, can I catch one?
I had two opossums when I was a kid. The momma opossum got run over by a pickup while she was crossing the road with the babies on her back. Two of the little babies survived, and I took them home and my mom and I bottle fed them for about a week, then they started eating cat food. I have no idea if it was legal or not. (Check with your local game warden, he'll know). They were litter box trained, and loved to take a bath, and were quite fond of baby powder. They also would not take any guff off of our dog (toy fox terrier). They like to climb on stuff, and ended up tearing up my mom's drapes, so I ended up giving them to the zoo. They put them in the ';petting zoo';. I wouldn't recommend trying to catch or trapping one. They have a nasty bite.
Nope; you need a liscense, i think. You would probably need to buy one (don't take it out of the wild; it'd make a bad pet) amd they're omnivors, so berries, bugs, meats... They only live a few years and sometimes make ';burrows'; in your couch :)

And they're easily litterbox trained.

oh, p.s- Im not sure that these people know what they're talking about. From what I've read they make nice pets and are very affectionate. Just DO NOT GET ONE FROM THE WILD. They're right--it'll probably have diseases and will be vicious. they have nasty teeth. And make sure you treat it right because they CAN get mean if treated badly.

They DO NOT smell bad (except for the poo) unless they are playing Opposum 9dead) because they let out an odor like a dead animal.

I wouldn't reccomaand one, but they don't seem all that bad. Just watch out for its 50 teeth (canine teeth are over an inch long!)
Hello they carry rabies...is it worth that risk. Besides they belong in the wild, why would you want to take that from them. Go to the zoo to see wildlife in captivity. Just get a cat or dog. There are so many at shelters that need homes. Yes it is illegal, call game wardens office. Texas parks and wildlife.
Seriously opossums are mean, they WILL bite you. If you found one as a baby that was abandoned, maybe you could tame it. But something that's been living wild it's entire life will most likely bite your finger off in hopes of getting away.

Get a cat or a dog.
maybe this would help.

call your animal shelter to find out if you can have one. i don't think that there is a law against it.

they are dirty creatures though.
Bad idea, opossum are notorious for carrying diseases, including rabies. Just leave them be and get a domestic animal.
What the hell would you want with a opossum. They are nasty and dirty. get a cat.
Is it legal to have Morons like GWB live in texas, that azzhole
They are nasty, vile creatures, and are not to be kept as pets. This really is a STUPID idea.
I own one and I name it obama

  1. I don't know what these people are talking about. someone said they carrie rabies. No opossums do not carry rabies, they are not dirty....they are actually rather clean animals. They aren't rodents, they are marsupials. They don't stink. And they can be really friendly if raised from a baby. babies from the wild need to be kept warm because they can't regulate their body temperature at that young of an age.

    1. thank you for this post, Opossums are actually related to kangaroo...they do not generally bite an their metabolism rejects most disease including rabies, most of their hissing is used as a threat, they do not growl and if their attempted threat does not scare off predators they will fall into a seizure which is uncontrollable, releasing dead animal smell (playing dead) so predator will leave them alone, most predators will not eat something that smells that foul. they actually make great grounds keepers, removing snakes, rats, eggs, insects and so on. they do not hang from their tails like some believe, they may use to assist in moving about but mostly tail is used for carrying twigs and leaves for building a nest. opossums are actually quite docile animal and very clean.

  4. Thank you Cynthia Martin. You took the words right out of my mouth! People do need to be informed of the truth about opposums.

They are also marsupials the only ones in North America and I believe we have to varieties of them. How unique is it for us to have such a wonderful mammal here!

People listen to other people's opinions instead of seeking truth. Opposums are not related to rodents at all and that is why people hate them and harm them. They even play dead to protect themselves and people take advantage of that. So I spread the word about this marvelous, clean and absolutely adorable and misunderstood creature!
