We have an opossum that keeps ripping up our garbage. Does anyone how to get rid of him without traps?

we don't want to harm him just deter him from the property. it really freaks our cat out. he'll come up a flight of stairs and right to the back door. i'm afraid him might bite if he's cornered. We have an opossum that keeps ripping up our garbage. Does anyone how to get rid of him without traps?
You can't really mess with opossums. We had one and nothing we did could get rid of it. My dad had to kill it so it wouldn't infect our cats (we had around 15 when he killed it).We have an opossum that keeps ripping up our garbage. Does anyone how to get rid of him without traps?
There are humane traps available. Opossums carry lots of diseases so you really need to get rid of it because if it bit you or your cat, that would be bad. Even their droppings can cause diseases! Have you ever seen their teeth? Talk about scary! I love all animals but I have limits and any one that is seen where I keep my horse is promptly 'taken care of'. They are mean and can cause a very serious and often deadly disease in horses, EPM, so we dont mess around.

Yes they will bite, but only after playing dead, so be careful!
Don't want to ';harm'; it?? Whyever not???Possum are about the NASTIEST vermin around. Only rats are worse.

Relatively easy to kill, difficult to kill quickly. Their brains are so small, the saying is';They're too stupid to know they're dead';.
im having the same problem with this cat outside that wont go in a trap!!! your best bet is really to trap him and relocate him!
I put hot sauce mixed with water in a water bottle and sprayed him. I also put hot sauce on the bags, so he'd get a little taste and that was it he never came back. If you're really brave, Get some rubber bands and whenever he comes near pop him with one. Doesn't hurt just a little sting. Don't pick it up!!! They carry rabies and other diseases. Also try animal rescue.
I have cats, racoons, and opossums in my area and my garbage is fine. I put it into a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid and keep the can out of reach of the critters - I built a wooden holder that prevents the can from tipping over. Then only put the garbage out the morning of pick-up - never put your garbage out the night before.

Easy.
Try putting your garbage in a container with a tight fitting lid! If you take away his food source he will look else where!
Put a sinder block on top of your garbage can lid.

Sprinkle pepper around the can. They don't like sniffing it and will learn to stay away.
walk over, pick up gently place somewhere else(cuddly and cute they are)
