How would I go about building a cage for an opossum?

I am considering buying a Virginia Opossum. I am planning on building a cage for it (while it's a baby). I was wondering would chicken wire or mesh fence hurt the possum. Are there any better materials I could use for fencing? How would I go about building a cage for an opossum?
ok ive done this before it takes a little work but in the long run its a good deal ,goahead and build you a standerd dog house 4 walls 1 floor 1 roof ok you dont wanna use plastic mesh cause the opossum will just chew threw it use chiken wire and no it will not hut him for a matter of fact he will like it cause he will grind his teeth down on it ,take a hevyduty stapple gun and go to pounchen every were you see thats not stappleed down stapple it to make sure he dont get out, make sure when you make the dog house that you get a skillsaw and cut round holes in all 4 walls right in the middle then cover the holes by stappleing some wire to it this will help to cycle air threw the house so the little feller suffacate. Check it is legal to own. Some dealers get away with selling the illegal to keep animals. Possiums are strong. They do bite sometimes. They will want a deep box to go in that is dark like a hole in tree would be. When out they will want something to climb and cling on. Check feed store and hardware store for best solution. Some feed stores have cages made such as rabbit hutch on legs. Good luck and get its rabie shot also. *mamatx
When I was fostering an opossum I used a large dog kennel %26amp; lined the outside of the bars with galvanized fencing (so he wouldnt get his head stuck) %26amp; zip tied it into place, making sure there was no sharp edges exposed. Inside he had branches to climb on %26amp; a hidey hole to sleep. He seemed to enjoy himself while residing there.

Make sure you know of a vet that will treat your opossum %26amp; make sure you know %26amp; understand their diets.....both are very important. Also, permits may be required - Check with your Department of Natural Resources.
