What is the correct way to pronounce the word opossum?

I have always heard it pronounced like possum but I live in the south. If this is one correct way of saying it then how would you word this sentence?

An opossum doesn't hatch from an egg.

A possum doesn't hatch from an egg.

A opossum doesn't hatch from an egg.

I know that you are supposed to use an with a vowel but if the vowel is not pronounced then do you still use an?What is the correct way to pronounce the word opossum?
.Your first two sentences are both correct. That is,

';An opossum doesn't hatch from an egg'; is correct, and

';A possum doesn't hatch from an egg'; is also correct.

The word possum is a perfectly good English word. Both ';possum'; and ';opossum'; are good words. The form, ';possum'; is mainly used to designate the ones that live in Australia and that part of the world, and the form, ';opossum'; is more often used to designate the ones in America, but it's not incorrect to call them possums, too. Many Southerners prefer the form, ';possum.';

The correct way to pronounce the word opossum is oh-POSS-um. The ';o'; is not silent. See the links below for more info. What is the correct way to pronounce the word opossum?
Technically Opossum is pronounced either with a silent o or without a silent o.

So technically all 3 of your sentances are correct, I've lived all over the US tho and have never heard anyone actually pronounce the o. So stick with using A reguardless of what species ur talking about.

I believe 'possom is Southern slang, not proper English. I've always heard the ';o'; pronounced, so the word sounds like ';uh-possum.'; Therefore, the first sentence would be correct.
The correct way to use it in a sentence would be, ';An oppossum.'; The way people pronounce words doesn't change the way it's supposed to be spelled. Just like people pronounce the word 'nuclear' as 'nucular' doesn't change how it should be used in sentences. Hope this helped.
with out the o, its just possum, the second sentence is correct
u don't use vowels if its silent and i think its pronounced ';Poss-Um the ';O'; is silent

the English language just puts alot of silent letters in words to confuse us example; ';P';terodactyl
i think A possom :-S thats how i say it and never was corrected
The correct spelling is Opossum, but it is also correct to spell as Possum. the first 2 sentences are right.
