Can a dog get rabies from catching and/or killing an opossum?

It's highly unlikely because a possum is not an ordinary mammal; it's a marsupial. So can a possum get rabies? The answer is, ';yes,'; but rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE.

This may have something to do with the opossum鈥檚 low body temperature (94-97潞 F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum鈥檚 body. Can a dog get rabies from catching and/or killing an opossum?
If the possum was rabid and your dog's rabies vaccination was not up to date - yes.

Be sure to get your dog vaccinated for rabies regularly, don't let it lapse if there are wild animals in your area - they often do have rabies - possums, raccoons, bats, even feral cats and dogs can be carrier. Can a dog get rabies from catching and/or killing an opossum?
If the possum is infected with rabies and had broken your dogs skin, yes.

ADD:

Although rare, Opossums CAN be infected with rabies. I wish people would do their research BEFORE spewing off.

Always take your dog for his vaccinations as recommended by your Vet and he will be fine. If he is bitten, clean the wound and have the Vet check him for infection
Opossums can carry rabies, but it's rare because they have a low body temperature...the virus has a difficult time surviving.
If the opossum was rabid, and your dog came in contact with it's salvia or blood, then yes your dog can get rabies.
opossum DO NOT Carry rabies. They are actually extremely clean animals.
