Is there any difference between a possum and an opossum?

If so what are they?Is there any difference between a possum and an opossum?
In the US, both words mean the same species, just different ways to say it depending on where you live.





However, there is a separate species called a possum that lives in Australia. There are many different species in that group. There is only one opossum- the virginia opossum, which happens to be the only marsupial in the US.
